Egypt is a major consumer of paper however based on a report released by the National Council for Production and Economic Affairs the country only produce 35% of its printing and writing paper as well as newsprint and the rest is imported.
Egypt consumes currently about 635000 tons of printing and writing paper. It is expected that country’s demand for paper increases by 5%, to hit 720 thousand tons next year, according to the report issued by the Industrial and Mining Projects Council.
The report also mentions that there are positive factors for paper industry in Egypt, which includes low cost of production expenses comparing to European countries. This would offer Egypt the perfect opportunity to develop newsprint production facilities. The report also suggests higher import taxes on paper in order to support local production.
