Sudan Currency Chief Warns of RSF Counterfeit Threat

Mohamed Abdelrahman Krory, general manager of Sudan Currency Printing Press (SCPP), has raised serious concerns regarding attempts by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to print and counterfeit Sudanese currency. Speaking at the recently concluded Security Designers Forum in Istanbul, Turkey, Krory delivered a speech that received widespread international attention.

During his session titled ‘Designing Banknotes and Security Documents in Times of Crisis: The Sudan Experience’, the SCPP general manager stressed that the Central Bank of Sudan is the only authority legally authorised to issue Sudanese currency and contract its printing through SCPP. He further added that any operation carried out outside this system is illegitimate and does not represent the Sudanese state.

Despite the destruction of the printing press headquarters in Khartoum due to the ongoing war, Krory explained that the institution successfully sustained its work by establishing alternative centres in three cities, which allowed the printing of new currency denominations to continue while meeting the state’s needs for secure documents.

This continued operation reflects the extensive measures taken by the institution to maintain the printing of currency and official documents despite exceptional circumstances imposed by the war. The Sudanese official highlighted these counterfeiting actions as direct attempts to undermine a prominent symbol of state sovereignty, stressing that the authority to print money and issue currency must remain strictly within official state institutions and cannot be transferred to any other entity.
