Ethiopia: Rapidly Growing Hub for Plastic, Printing & Packaging Imports

According to the latest data from EUROMAP, Ethiopia has emerged as the second largest importer of primary-form plastics in East and Central Africa. Lacking domestic production of plastic raw materials, the nation relies entirely on international markets to meet local demands. Between 2007 and 2024, imports surged by 584%, rising from 43 kt to 294 kt, at a robust average annual growth rate of 12%.

Recent data from VDMA also highlights the nation’s position as a top-tier importer across several key manufacturing sectors. In plastics technology, Ethiopia’s imports were valued at €31 million in 2024, placing the country among the leading importers in the region. This trajectory is mirrored in the packaging technology sector, where Ethiopia has consistently ranked as one of the largest regional importers, with annual trade volumes fluctuating between €16 million and €34 million over the last five years.

Furthermore, the country has solidified its status as one of East Africa’s leading markets for printing and paper processing technology. Between 2020 and 2024, annual imports ranged between €5 million and €12 million, underscoring a steady demand for advanced processing capabilities.

Opening Hours: (25-26 June 2026): 10 am – 5.30 pm, (27 June 2026): 10 am – 4 pm.
