Signify Installs 3D Printed Luminaires in Egypt’s Seoudi Stores

World leader in connected LED lighting systems, software, and services Signify, has successfully completed the final stage for its project with Seoudi, one of Egypt’s oldest and largest retail chains, to implement sustainable 3D printed lighting units across all its stores in Cairo and the North Coast.

Formerly known as Philips Lighting, the Dutch multinational company is considered as the world’s first lighting manufacturer to produce 3D printed luminaires and innovative bespoke LED lighting solutions on an industrial scale, making it possible to produce a cost-effective, fast, and sustainable production process.

Signify’s partnership with the Egyptian supermarket chain aims to enhance the shopping experience, increase energy efficiency, provide a financially viable path for other retailers, and transform Egypt’s retail sector, which is a major contributor to global carbon emissions. Signify and Seoudi collaborated to design and deliver over 2000 3D printed luminaires, including pendants and projectors. While the pendant lights were designed to enhance the fresh look of the fruit and vegetables section by providing a unique lighting system that highlights their natural colour and freshness, the projector lights were customized 3D printed luminaires with different light recipes to improve the appearance and quality of the products in the specific sections of the supermarket, such as bread and pastries, cheese, fresh fish, and premium red meat.

Mohamed Saad, CEO, Signify NEA Region, speaks on the transformative impact of Signify’s 3D technologies on the retail sector, “At Signify, we believe that lighting is not just about illuminating spaces, but about creating meaningful experiences that improves people’s lives. We are thrilled in partnering Seoudi to design and implement a bespoke lighting solution that not only enhances the overall shopping experience but also helps achieve their sustainability goals.”

“Our expertise in 3D printing technology enables us to provide innovative and cost-effective lighting solutions to our customers, while achieving our carbon-neutrality goals and energy efficiency, contributing to Egypt’s vision for a more sustainable future. Our eco-friendly luminaires, which are 3D printed using 100% recycled materials, truly embodies our shared commitment to sustainability, as the supermarkets can change the lighting units, recycle them, and redesign them at any point within a very short timeframe,” adds Saad.

It is worth noting that this is not the first major collaboration between Signify and Seoudi. Previously, Signify had supplied Seoudi with UV-C lighting devices to disinfect all tools, surfaces, and air from viruses and bacteria, ensuring a healthy and safe environment for their customers.

Signify also has a significant footprint across different segments in Egypt, including contributions to major national projects such as the New Administrative Capital. The company has over 25,000 LED lighting units that provide 50% of the new urban community’s lighting, and if these units are connected, it could further reduce consumption by 40%. Signify also illuminated over 50% of the COP27 summit in Sharm El-Sheikh using LED units that provide 50% energy savings. Currently, discussions with the government are ongoing, with Signify committed to contributing further to Egypt’s vision for energy efficiency.
