Sri Lanka Cancels Exams Due to Acute Paper Shortage

Sri Lanka has cancelled exams for millions of schoolchildren as the country ran out of printing paper due to Colombo’s dollar shortage to finance imports. The worsening economic situation prompted the island nation to take such an out-of-the-blue, extreme step.

Education authorities said that the term tests, originally scheduled for a week from 21 March onwards, were postponed indefinitely due to an acute shortage of paper in light of the worst financial crisis in Sri Lanka since its independence in 1948.

The Department of Education of the Western Province stated that “school principals cannot hold the tests as printers in Sri Lanka were unable to secure foreign exchange to import the necessary paper and ink for printing.”

Official sources said that the move could effectively lead to the disruption of tests for about two-thirds of the country’s 4.5 million students. The value attached to these term tests is that they form part of the continuous assessment process to determine whether students can be promoted to the next grade at the academic year end.

The cash-strapped South Asian country of 22 million people announced this week that it will seek a rescue plan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to solve the worsening external debt crisis and shore up external reserves.

The IMF confirmed on 18 March that it was considering President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s request to discuss a bailout.
