Sharjah Book Authority Participates at Moscow Book Fair

The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) presented the works of 58 Emirati writers translated into Russian at the 34th edition of the Moscow International Book Fair (MIBF), the largest book forum in Russia and Eastern Europe, as part of its efforts to open the horizons for the Emirati and Arab cultural movement to communicate with its international counterpart.

The Moscow International Book Fair, held at the Expo centre Fairgrounds in the Russian capital city, saw the participation of 200 publishing houses in a hybrid form and the organization of 300 diverse cultural events.

The authority reviewed the efforts led by Sharjah to advance the movement of knowledge production, enhance creative industries in the UAE and the Arab region, and facilitate mechanisms of access to knowledge for various societies of the world.

In its exhibition pavilion, which witnessed a high footfall, the authority revealed the opportunities offered by the Sharjah Publishing City Free Zone (SPCFZ) for workers in the book industry in the world to start their work and expand in the Arab publishing market.

The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) highlighted the vision of the Sharjah International Literary Agency, launched to facilitate communication between publishers, writers, translators, and creative content makers, and to organize their operations in accordance with legal and professional frameworks that guarantee the rights of both publishers and authors, stimulate the Arab publishing market, and present its products in various languages of the world.

As part of its agenda at the fair, the SBA delegation met Sergey Kakin, Director of the Moscow International Book Fair, to talk about areas of future cooperation in organizing international cultural events, as well as strengthening areas of cooperation and joint action to support Arabic-Russian translations.

Mansour Al Hassani, Head of Sales Department, SBA, says that the authority’s participation in the Moscow International Book Fair stems from the central vision of the Sharjah Cultural Project, which was established by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who calls for building bridges of culture between different nations and exchanging knowledge and expertise to support the publishing sector.

“This distinguished participation in the exhibition gave us the opportunity to display Russian editions of the works of elite Emirati writers, in a step that introduces local literature and opens future opportunities for more translations and joint work between Emirati publishers and their Russian counterparts,” adds Al Hassani.
