Mondi Expands Innovative Paper-based Packaging Solutions

Multinational packaging and paper group Mondi has expanded its FunctionalBarrier range of medium, high, and very high-barrier paper-based packaging solutions to support customers on their journey to use more sustainable packaging solutions.

With Mondi’s extensive R&D activities and expertise in both paper and plastic as well as investments in new technology and increased capacity, the company has evolved its portfolio, offering a full range of FunctionalBarrier Papers to customers.

Designed for e-commerce, industrial, and personal-care applications, the range applies aqueous coatings and extrusions as barrier technologies to provide a longer shelf life to products.

While the medium-barrier solution, designed for fresh, frozen, and dried food packaging, e-commerce, personal care packaging, and industrial uses like cement bags, offer great sealability and a medium water vapour barrier, the high-barrier functional paper offers a medium oxygen and water vapour barrier, with high grease and mineral oil barrier, ideal for chocolates and frozen foods. The very high-barrier solution for consumer food products such as cereals, coffee, confectionery, and powdered milk provides excellent product protection from water vapour and oxygen, ensuring a long shelf life.

The range is also designed to be recyclable in European paper streams and provides a renewable packaging solution for difficult or impossible-to-recycle materials. Mondi’s PTS/cyclos-HTP-certified papers adhere to testing protocols and accepted industry guidelines as a precondition for recycling.

Mondi’s production of the FunctionalBarrier Paper range is done entirely in-house. Designed to be recyclable in paper streams across Europe and using responsibly-sourced base materials, the solutions offer renewable alternatives to plastic laminates and multi-material aluminum-based packaging.

Thomas Ott, CEO Flexible Packaging, Mondi Group, sums it up, “We live by our approach of using paper where possible, plastic when useful and our range of FunctionalBarrier Paper is a perfect example of this. There is more than one way for our customers to achieve their sustainability goals and our unique market position and value chain means we can tailor our solutions to meet their needs. We develop packaging solutions that are sustainable by design while still providing the necessary protection for their products.  This is in line with our Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) commitment to make all our packaging solutions reusable, recyclable, and compostable.”
