Jeddah Chamber Discusses Paper & Cardboard Regulations

The Jeddah Chamber Of Commerce & Industry (JCCI) organized an awareness workshop on technical regulations for paper and cardboard products, and leather products, in cooperation with the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO). Members from the business community, industry stakeholders, and investors attended the meet.

Presented by Issa bin Abdulaziz Al-Mulhim, senior comformity specialist at SASO,  the workshop shed light on the regulations and their areas of concern, determining the basic requirements included in these regulations, and the comformity assessment procedures that suppliers must adhere to before their products reach the local market. This is done to identify the risks, implement controls, and validate through testing to ensure the health and safety of the consumer, the transparency of information provided to the consumer by the product labels, and the preservation of the environment.

Technical regulations for paper and cardboard applied to all paper and cardboard products including graphic papers (printing and writing papers, and newsprint) and packaging papers (corrugated fiberboard, cardboard, tissue paper, paper bag, greaseproof paper, parchment paper, kraft paper, industrial paper, and pulp). Food contact papers and wallpapers stand excluded from the scope of this regulation while wet and perfumed wipes, and makeup wipes are subject to approval from the Saudi Food & Drug Authority (SFDA).

For leather, technical regulations apply to all leather products including natural leather, synthetic leather, or a mix of both, and their related articles. Footwear that are subject to the provisions of the technical regulations for footwear and their accessories, and raw materials such as animal hides which is not intended for direct consumption are exempted.
