Skanem Africa Expands Regional Footprint with New Plant

Leading labelling solutions provider Skanem Africa has established a new labelling factory in Tanzania’s largest city Dar es Salaam. Operations commenced in late July 2024 and are part of the company’s aim to provide better customer service and expand its regional footprint.

The new facility is a smaller counterpart to Skanem Africa’s existing operations in Kenya, primarily designed to increase production volume, capacity, and lead times. “By establishing a local manufacturing presence, we aim to serve our existing customer base more effectively while also attracting new clients,” comments Sachen Gudka, Managing Director, Skanem Interlabels Nairobi Limited.

State-of-the-art machinery

Initially, label production in Tanzania will commence with a single, cutting-edge printing press which can produce a variety of labels for the flexo industry, including self-adhesive labels (PSL), BOPP wrap around labels, and shrink sleeve labels.

“These printing capabilities will enhance label production and cater to the diverse needs of businesses in Tanzania and beyond, ensuring high-quality labelling solutions. Future plans involve expansion with more presses and labelling options to match industry needs. The Tanzania site can also be used as a backup for the Kenya site and vice versa, with business contingency planning in mind,” says Gudka.

Strategic location for future expansion

As a commercial hub, Dar es Salaam enables Skanem Africa’s manufacturing footprint to be closer to new and existing markets in seven East African countries.

The new factory marks a significant milestone in the Nairobi-headquartered company’s regional expansion. Servicing and deliveries will also be highly improved for both existing and new clients. “We aim to continue our commitment to support local and regional businesses with top-tier labelling solutions,” adds Gudka.
