Nigeria Emerges West Africa’s Food & Packaging Investment Hub

Driven by rapid population growth and a booming consumer market, Nigeria has solidified its position as West Africa’s primary destination for agrofood and packaging technology. According to data from VDMA, Nigeria’s imports of food and packaging technology reached €265 million in 2024, with packaging technology imports alone accounting for €121 million. This investment surge is essential to meet the needs of a population projected to soar from 238 million in 2025 to 411 million by 2050.

According to Statista, the domestic food market is projected to reach around $233.53 billion in 2025, with an expected annual growth rate of 10.76% from 2025 to 2030. Despite significant investments in local food production, WTO figures show Nigeria’s food imports at $6.1 billion in 2023, positioning the nation as one of Africa’s foremost food importers. Nigeria contributed $2.2 billion in food exports to the global economy.
